MVRDV and Space Encounters have collaboratively proposed a 22-storey residential tower for Amsterdam's Sluisbuurt neighbourhood, setting a benchmark for sustainable design. Named "Nachteiland," the tower features a timber framework, an energy-generating façade, and ample communal spaces aimed at enhancing community strength. The building's lower levels host stores and cafes, integrating with the neighbourhood elements, while the tower above comprises diverse apartments. It aspires to be a landmark in the new neighbourhood, displaying different faces from various perspectives. The tower's height varies, incorporating outdoor areas, diverse façades, and a mix of apartments. Sustainability is central, with a primarily wooden structure, recycled materials, and a remarkable 61 per cent Building Circularity Index score. "Nachteiland" aims to exemplify environmentally sensitive design as a solution to housing needs.
